Binaries and labels, binaries, labels, binaries. Yuck.
I would not normally post this on here, because it isn’t poetry, and I tend to keep my opinions away from here. However, something is really bothering me this morning as I troll along the internet seeing a certain stem of hatred that I can’t bear to witness anymore.
In our society, life is a constant battle of binaries. Is (s)he a man or a woman? Are they gay or straight? Skinny or fat? Ugly or pretty? Blah, blah, blah, as if it matters.
I’m wondering, sincerely and sadly, why there can only be binaries in this world we know today. Bisexuality is a lost cause because it’s only okay to be straight or gay. There is no crusade for happiness with any body size. No, it’s a constant crusade against ‘fat’ and ‘skinny’ people, which becomes a war of Fat vs. Skinny. You can only be fat or skinny, no in-between where you feel comfortable. I’m sorry, you’re stuck with one label or the other. You can’t be whatever you are! You have to be what everyone else is!
It’s frustrating and sad. I know people who feel like an outcast for something that is not out of the norm, but is perceived that way by a disgusting majority. I’m just wondering when we will all be confident enough with ourselves to accept everyone else? I’m wondering when we’ll all open our eyes and our minds and be happy and healthy with our bodies and our sexuality enough to accept everyone else’s too?
